Royal Basilica of Our Lady of Atocha

The image of Our Lady of Atocha is the oldest in Madrid, and its devotion dates back to apostolic times, according to legend, attributed to Nicodemus and painted by Saint Luke. It is said to have been brought to Spain by the disciples of Saint Peter from Antioch. 17th-century chronicles provide more concrete information, mentioning a 7th-century document from Saint Ildefonsus, who claims to have prayed before an image in Madrid with similar characteristics to the current one.
